Jane's retired dad (John Hemphill) pays her a surprise visit and, just like the old days, he embarrasses her in front of her friends with his hapless puttering and botched inventions. Susan (Patricia Zentilli) suggests that Jane (Teresa Pavlinek) establish a grown up relationship with her father; and the first step is to start calling him Dave. In their first grown-up conversation, Dave confides to Jane that retirement has left him feeling useless; Jane suggests that Dave cultivate some new interests - some that don't involve mom. Jane thinks their talk went well, but the next day Dave shows up at Spirits and announces he's leaving mother and moving back to the Big Smoke. Meanwhile, the puttering continues and finally Jane's resolve crumbles - along with her vacuum cleaner, and Walton's office chair. As much as she loves her dad, his inept puttering embarrasses her and messes up her life. But when she tells him so, Dave breaks down and rues his squandered life. He once had dreams of being an inventor; an entrepreneur. Instead he wasted 25 years in the rat race. He'll be doing his wife (Robin Duke), and Jane, a favor by leaving them. Meanwhile, Iggy (Andrew Misle) is set to take on reining champion Desmond the Hellraiser (Nigel Shawn Williams) in a fork lift race. But with just less than an hour before the race, the throttle on Iggy's forklift is feeling sluggish. Iggy wants to race; Dave wants to putter. Jane sees a way to help them both. |
